Governance

University of Michigan Hillel has a unique two-tiered governance structure reflecting the fact that it is a student organization and empowers students to take major responsibility for running it.
Hillel's Governing Board is made up of 12 students (8 undergraduates, 4 graduate students), 6 faculty and community members, and the Chair of the Board of Trustees who serves ex officio. The Governing Board is responsible for determining Hillel policy, approving the affiliation of Hillel groups, allocating funds for programming, and evaluating the programs. No other Hillel places this much responsibility in the hands of students, and it is arguably one of the reasons that University of Michigan alumni are so significantly represented in the professional and lay leadership ranks of Jewish institutions and communities throughout the country.

Get to Know Your 2010 Executive Board!

Picture I’m Ryan Garber, and I am an out-of-state student from Long Island. I am graduating in 2011, majoring in Public Policy and minoring in Judaic Studies. After graduation, I hope to be in Washington DC. In Ann Arbor, even though my official address is in the self-proclaimed "Shtetl" I can always be seen in the Hillel building; whether working in the kitchen, hanging out in the office, studying in a classroom upstairs, or socializing in the hallways. Prior to serving as Chair, I was the secretary of the governing board and co-chair of the Jewish Penicillin Hotline. I enjoy baking, and have become proficient at making brownies (thanks to Duncan Hines), but still do not know how to chop an onion correctly. I enjoy listening to Guster but I still have a weakness for the Yeshiva Boys Choir. I am very excited to serve the Jewish community on campus and if you need anything or just want to hang out feel free to email me: rygarber@umich.edu.

Picture Hello everyone! My name is Danielle Bluford and I am from West Bloomfield, Michigan. I am studying Psychology with a minor in PitE, and this year I will be the Vice Chair at Hillel! I love to travel, read, and go vintage shopping. If I were to sing a duet with a character from my new favorite show, Glee, it would definitely be well, the whole cast because together they sound fantastic. If you are ever looking for me on campus, I am either at Hillel, Espresso Royale, or in the pure silence of the Law Library. Some of my favorite Hillel memories come from my Spring Break trips to Nicaragua and El Salvador, and also my favorite time of year to hang at Hillel, 24/7 finals week! I LOVE famous people (note Elliot Yamin in my picture) and going to concerts, especially free ones at Borders. My secret talent is making people laugh, and never knowing the correct lyrics to songs, even though I like my own versions better anyway. Email me to chat at blufordd@umich.edu

Picture Hey! My name is Yael Mendelson and I am from West Bloomfield, MI. I am majoring in History and Judaic Studies, and studying Secondary Education though the School of Ed. I am the incoming Secretary, so I have been practicing my touch-typing over break thanks to Mavis Beacon. My favorite class that I have taken at U of M is Intro to World Religion, and my favorite place to study is the East Hall Atrium. Currently, my favorite youtube video is the adorable Asian boy playing the ukelele to “I’m yours”, and I love to play Speed Scrabble and Set. I collect environmentally friendly grocery bags, and my most treasured one is from Trader Joe’s which happens to be my favorite place to buy food. If you ever want to talk Hillel, Jewish learning, the latest Newsweek cover story, or anything else email me at yaeltm@umich.edu.

Picture My name is Jon Hornstein, and I am your Hillel Treasurer. I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland and I am a business major here on campus. I enjoy playing and following sports, especially baseball and football, and I am a diehard Baltimore Orioles and Ravens fan. I also love music, especially hip-hop, and my favorite artists are the roots, common, Jay-Z, and a tribe called quest. Some people don’t know this, but sometimes I like to rap a little myself, so if you ever want to drop a few rhymes let me know. My favorite TV shows are entourage and Friday Night Lights, but really I can find something in common with pretty much anyone. So if you like to talk about absolutely anything (including Hillel) I’d love to get to know you. Email me at jwhorn@umich.edu.
